TERMINALS PTY LTD:
February 2000 to Present

Employed as Engineering Manager with responsibilities for Capital Projects at both Coode Island and Geelong sites and some Capital Project responsibilities at the Adelaide site. Responsible for all maintenance activities at Coode Island.

PROJECTS

Vapour Emission Control System:

Installation of two combustors, ductwork and control system to treat vapour emissions from the terminal. Estimated Cost: $4.3m

Vapour Ductwork:

Extensive upgrading of vapour extraction ductwork from gal to stainless steel. Cost: $120k

Vapour Return Line:

Installation of vapour return line from wharf to eliminate vapour discharges to atmosphere during ship unloading.

Cost: $25k

Groundwater Remediation System:

Project managed Environmental contractor to remediate soil on Maribyrnong River side of Terminal. Cost: $286k

New Waste Storage Tank:

Design and project management of new 50kL waste storage tank and pumping system to collect waste liquid and transfer to road tanker. Cost: $90k

Truck Overfill Protection:

Installation of high level alarm system to prevent overfilling of road tankers. Cost: $28k

Drum Fill Upgrade:

Upgrade of existing drum filling machine to improve vapour extraction and to allow filling of flammables. Cost: $18k

Tallow Unloading Upgrade:

Rationalisation of existing tallow unloading pad to simplify and quicken the operation. Cost: $30k

Miscellaneous:

Various minor piping projects and small upgrade projects on fire systems, vapour emission control systems, bulk storage tanks, compressed air and nitrogen blanketing of tanks.

Coode Island Redevelopment:

Some involvement in the proposed major redevelopment of the Coode Island Storage facility.

CSL BIOPLASMA:
September 1997 – February 2000

Employed on hourly rate contract basis as a consulting engineer to project manage various capital works. This involves managing projects from conceptual design (and some detail design) through to construction, commissioning and handover to production.

MAJOR PROJECTS

New PFW Still:

Project Management of new PFW (Pyrogen Free Water or "Water for Injection") Distillation Unit. Cost: $1.4M

New Boiler:

Investigation, design, installation and project management of a new 6 MW boiler including boiler house extension, ancillary equipment and modifications to the existing control system. Cost: $1.2M

New Chiller:

Investigation, design, installation and project management of a new 1200 kW Chiller including condenser and chilled water piping. Cost: $700K.

Tank Farm Upgrade:

Design, installation and project management of new 50,000 litre Caustic Soda storage tank, new 50,000 litre Acetic Acid storage tank and relocation of an existing Hydrochloric Acid storage tank. Cost: $770K.

Effluent System Upgrade:

Preliminary design to investigate options to upgrade effluent treatment system to cater for increased production. Scope includes development of a Waste Management Plan. This is to be accomplished by the following method:
    • Audit of waste streams;
    • Waste minimisation;
    • Waste recycling;
    • Appropriate treatment technology;
    • Recommend optimum design solution.

Cost: $50K.

W R GRACE AUSTRALIA LTD:

Employed on hourly rate contract basis as a consulting engineer to project manage various capital works. This involves all aspects of each project from conceptual design (and some detail design) through to construction, commissioning and handover to production.

MAJOR PROJECTS

New Mixing Plant (Construction Products Division):

Design and project management of a new concrete admixture plant involving two 10KL mixing vessels. The mixing tanks are on load cells that are interfaced to a process controller that stores recipes, scales ingredients to batch sizes and adds bulk liquids automatically. Included in the scope are new material handling and dust suppression equipment for bagged powders.

Cleaner Production:

Direct piping of a number of solvents from underground storage tanks to eight printing presses and provision of peristaltic pumps for ink delivery to the presses. The main aim of this project is to reduce solvent emissions. Cost: $200K.

Solvent Mixing Room:

Construction of a dangerous goods store for class 3.1 liquids and design and project management for a new primer/adhesive mixing process. Cost: $150K.

Waste Water Recycling:

Design and project management of a water recycling system for Grace Construction Products plants in Sydney and Melbourne. Cost: $120K.

Bulk Storage Tanks:

Design and project management of two 15,000 litre and one 45,000 litre bulk storage tanks for Grace Construction Products. Cost: $80K

Rotary Vacuum Drum Filter:

Investigated poor performance of existing scraper discharge unit and recommended conversion to a pre-coat type. Conducted pilot plant tests to prove the concept and subsequently managed the project through to completion. Cost $70K.

Vacuum Batch Mixer:

Design and project management of an agitated, jacketed vacuum batch mixing tank on load cells. This included design of a jacket water temperature control system. Cost $90K.

Chilled Water Piping:

Project management of new filter installation and replacement of corroded gal piping with ABS on a chilled water circuit. Cost $90K.

Solvent Tanks Overflow Protection:

Selection and implementation of ultrasonic high level alarms for four bulk solvent storage tanks and recommendations for further work to prevent overfilling. Cost $40K.

Die Retrofit:

Project management of new die installation on an existing plastic film extrusion and laminating machine. Cost: $300K.

Upgrade of Bulk Caustic Facility:

Upgrade of Bulk Caustic facility in Construction Products Plant in Sydney. Replacement of unloading and delivery piping and general upgrades to conform with the Dangerous Goods Regulations. Cost: $30K.

Miscellaneous Material Handling Projects:

Various small material handling projects utilising mechanical lifting equipment such as:
  • Vacuum lifters;
  • Small gravity roller conveyors;
  • Lifting equipment for bulk rolls;
  • Hydraulic scissor lifts.

CHEM ENG CONTRACTS PTY LTD:
February 1994 -- March 1995

Employed on hourly rate contract basis to perform process design and project management services to a wide variety of clients. Duties included liaising with clients, preparation of P&ID’s, equipment lists and specifications, engineering calculations, cost estimates, instrument/electrical control functional specification, quotations, construction supervision and commissioning.>

MAJOR PROJECTS

Fosters China Ltd:

Part of the team responsible for the preliminary process design and feasibility study for up to three breweries planned for China.

Tannin Extraction Plant:

Assisted in the development (which involved operation of a pilot plant), pre-engineering, process design and cost estimate for a plant for processing waste pinus radiata bark and extracting a tannin rich extract for use as a resin for reconstituted wood products. Estimated cost of large scale plant: $11M.

Fauldings Pharmaceutical:

P&ID’s for solvent tank farm, batching tank, spray drier and CIP systems; instrument/electrical functional spec, process design manual and equipment sizing calculations. Provided information for process validation and contributed to HAZOP study chaired by Chem Eng. Project cost:>$7M.

Mobil:

Design and project management of a drum and pail grease filling system that involved a novel design of the filling nozzle. Cost $120K.

Pro-Pine Nursery Supplies:

Conceptual design, P&ID’s, plant layout, control functional spec and cost estimate for a state of the art automated fertiliser batching plant. Estimated Cost$2M.

ITW FLUID POLYMERS PTY LTD

Bulk Liquid Storage and Delivery System:

Preliminary design, specification and budget cost estimate for a 30,000 litre bulk storage tank and delivery system. Estimated Cost: $150K.

PARKS VICTORIA - MACEDON RANGES REGION

Preparation of two binders containing MSDS’s of all chemicals stored on site (Macedon Depot). Project scope included the following:
  • survey of all chemicals on site;
  • acquisition of all MSDS’s;
  • preparation of two binders containing MSDS’s;
  • preparation of QA system to maintain binders;
  • recommendation of methodology to dispose of out of date chemicals.

VISY PAPER PTY LTD

Coatings Plant:

Tender specification documents and tender evaluation document for two bulk agitated stainless steel storage tanks and a stainless steel high shear mixing vessel. Cost: $100K

SNF (AUSTRALIA) PTY LTD

Polymer Mixing and Dosing Rig:

Organised repair of polymer mixing and dosing rig. Received the job on 31/12/97 and had the rig repaired, tested, commissioned and shipped to customer by 8/1/98.

Polymer Mixing and Dosing Rig:

Received the above rig in a poor state of repair after use by an SNF customer. Extensively refurbished rig including equipment repairs, painting, testing and commissioning.

JOHNSON MATTHEY (AUSTRALIA) LTD

Silver Nitrate Plant: Process trouble shooting and commissioning assistance on new silver nitrate plant. Carried out literature search to provide assistance to J/M staff to solve trace metal quality problems. Plant now runs successfully and J/M have supplied photographic quality silver nitrate to Kodak since 1996.

VANTICO PTY LTD (FORMERLY CIBA SPECIALTY CHEMICALS PTY LTD)

Ventilation and Extraction System Upgrade:

Design and Project Management of upgrade to ventilation exhaust air and fume extraction in the Production area. Cost: $65K

Replacement Boiler:

Investigation, requirements specification, tender specifications, tender evaluation document, tender interviews and project management of new 500 kW boiler to replace existing electric boiler. Cost: $80K

Adhesive Mixing Plant:

Process trouble shooting to solve a temperature related process problem involved in the production of adhesives in an agitated, jacketed pressure vessel. Included the design and AS1210 calculations for the pressure vessel.

Vessel Bunding:

Determined requirements and project managed concrete bunding for a 50,000 litre storage vessel. Cost: 30K.

Agitator Replacement:

Determined requirements and project managed replacement agitator for process reactor. Cost: $15K.

Cooling Tower:

Assessment of cooling water loads and sizing of tower. Specification for tower and tender selection. Sizing of pump. Project management and commissioning. This project was implemented as a turnkey. Cost: $30k.

Minor Projects:

Numerous minor projects and process investigations.



SANDHURST DAIRIES BENDIGO

New Yogurt Line:

Designed and specified steam and chilled water services for new process plant.

Dangerous Goods:

Designed and specified new facility for bulk caustic soda and bulk phosphoric acid storage and supply facility with respect to Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Chilled Water System:

Carried out audit and process capability study on factory chilled water system and made recommendations to optimise system.

Waste Treatment Plant:

Preliminary investigation into status of waste treatment plant with respect to EPA and water authority.

Dangerous Goods:

Preliminary design brief on upgrade requirements to satisfy dangerous goods regulations.
